Wansfell Mountain Race is based in Ambleside at the heart of the English Lake District.

Packed with cosy Lake District pubs, Ambleside boasts a host of excellent coffee shops, restaurants, takeaways, delis and bars, as well as enough outdoor shops to tempt mountain lovers of every persuasion.

Travel to Ambleside


By car:

From the South: take junction 36 off the M6, following signs to Windermere (A590 into A591). Follow the A591 to Ambleside. Follow the one way system through the village, bearing left towards Keswick. Drive past the roundabout for The Struggle then take a right hand turn into Ambleside University Campus.

From the North: take junction 40 off the M6 at Penrith, following signs West to Keswick on the A66. At first roundabout (Rheged Services) take 2nd exit for Pooley Bridge. At first junction, turn right for Glenridding/Patterdale and drive through both villages, climbing up to Kirkstone Pass. Opposite the Kirkstone Inn, turn right to Ambleside, down The Struggle. At the very bottom of the hill is a roundabout, turn right and right again into Ambleside University Campus.

Parking: There are a variety of all day car parks in Ambleside, and the closest to the event centre is the pay-and-display car park at Rydal Road. Please do not park on residential streets: as race organisers, we rely on the residents of the village.

By train:

From North or South: Travel to Oxenholme, then on to Windermere. Manchester to Windermere takes approximately 2.5 hours. Windermere is about 8km from Ambleside by bus, taxi ... or ferry! See below for onward travel information.

By bus:

From Windermere: bus routes #505, #555 or #599. The journey is 12 minutes. Check out Cumbria bus timetables.

By ferry:

From Bowness: add to the adventure and get a ferry to Ambleside! Check out Windermere Lake Cruises for ferries to Waterhead. From there, catch a taxi or bus to Ambleside or enjoy a short stroll to the village.
